London on 18 Feb - 18:00 to 20:30
Pride in London invites you to a panel discussion on faith and being LGBT+. Joining us will be: Chair: Richard Unwin, LGBT Humanists Canon Jeremy Pemberton Rev Andrew Cain Vicky Beeching Lazlo Pearlman Dr Arti Agrawal Rose Neelam Doors open: 6pm Panel discussion: 6.30-8.15pm Q&A: 8.15-8.30pm About the panellists Jeremy Pemberton has been a Church of England priest for 33 years. He has worked in parishes in various parts of England, and in theological education in England and the DR Congo. He is currently Senior Chaplain and Bereavement Service Manager for a large NHS Trust in Lincolnshire. His other work is as a professional singer at Southwell Minster, the Church of England cathedral for Nottinghamshire. In 2014 he was the first member of the clergy to marry their partner. This drew a lot of press attention, and brought him into conflict with his church, as a consequence of which he lost a job promotion. An Employment Tribunal last year ruled against him in a case under the Equality Act alleging that he had been discriminated against because of his sexuality and marital status. He is appealing the judgment. Andrew Cain is a priest of the Church of England who has been ministering in two parishes in North West London for the past 18 years. He became a committed Christian at University at the same time that he became aware of his sexuality and had his first boyfriend. He is fortunate that he was raised in a liberal and non-practising Church of England home and so has never been troubled by the anxieties and fears that many LGBTI people growing up in Christian homes suffer. He feels he was also trained and ordained at a time when the Church was much more open and accepting of gay and lesbian people than it has since become, and it is only since his marriage that his sexuality has become an issue for the Church (though it is clear to him that the Churchs slide into active homophobia has been gathering pace for a number of years). He is fortunate to serve congregations which represent the majority opinion of the people of the Church of England open, accepting and generous.
