Award-winning journalist and passionate gardener Alys Fowler headlines Polaris first summer read of 2017. Also contributing to the literary heat this evening are Joelle Taylor, James Maker, Rosie Wilby and James Wharton. Brought up in Hampshire, Alys Fowler studied at the Royal Horticultural Society and the Royal Botanic Gardens before being awarded with a Smithsonian Scholarship to study at the New York Botanical Gardens in 1998. Alys returned to the UK in 1999 to study at University College, London where, in 2002 she completed a masters degree in Society, Science and the Environment. In 2005 she worked for BBC Gardeners World as a horticultural researcher. In 2006, she became Head Gardener of the BBC garden at Berryfields in Stratford-upon-Avon. In 2008, she became a regular presenter on Gardeners World, and wrote a monthly blog on the programmes website. She writes regularly for newspapers and magazines and has a weekly column in The Guardian. Also her BBC series, The Edible Garden, was later accompanied by her book of the same name. She is the author of five books including her latest, Hidden Nature: A Voyage Of Discovery We also announce the shortlist for The Polari First Book Prize 2017 this evening. Polari is curated and journalist and author Paul Burston whose works include the recently acclaimed The Black Path published by Access Print Limited 2016.
